Through an equity-driven, student-centered process, the Evergreen community came together to transform an everyday space into one that reflects their values and welcomes everyone to the table.
Guided by a commitment to parity across the District's high schools, the project balances long-term vision with immediate impact. Early stakeholder engagement surfaced a clear desire for more daylight, diverse seating, and a more inviting atmosphere.
In response, the design team introduced varied seating options, improved sightlines, and a brighter, more open environment that supports both social interaction and individual use. Strengthened connections to the outdoors and enhanced vertical openness transform the perception of the space—without requiring a full rebuild.
Operational performance was equally central to the vision. A reconfigured servery—featuring a split queue and intuitive circulation— streamlines movement, supports student choice, and reduces congestion and wait times. Kitchen upgrades increase capacity and efficiency, informed by a careful assessment of existing equipment to retain viable assets and replace underperforming systems. This approach minimized waste while delivering immediate value and long-term cost savings.
Daylighting and biophilic design strategies, expressed through natural materials, textures, and color, create a healthier and more uplifting environment for students and staff. High-quality finishes and integrated graphics elevate the experience, reinforcing a sense of pride and care. The reimagined Evergreen High School cafeteria is where students find their place, connect with one another, and feel a stronger sense of belonging within their school community.
